Description:
Nature's Plus Advanced Therapeutics Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM Ultra Rx-Joint Cream is precisely calibrated topical formula that synergistically combines pure glucosamine, chondroitin and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). Each penetrating drop is then formulated with a proprietary botanical/nutrient-rich base, which includes silicon, magnesium, copper, zinc and shea butter for maximum benefits.

Glucosamine
Glucosamine is an important building block needed by the body to manufacture specialized molecules called glycosaminoglycans, found in cartilage.

Where is it found?
Glucosamine is not present in significant amounts in most diets. Supplemental sources are derived from the shells of shrimp, lobster, and crab, or may be synthesized.

Who is likely to be deficient?
A glucosamine deficiency in humans has not been reported.

Which form is best?
Glucosamine is available in several forms. The glucosamine sulfate (GS) form (stabilized with a mineral salt) is the only form clearly shown in clinical trials to be effective for osteoarthritis. For this reason, it is the preferred form.

GS is stabilized with one of two mineral salts: sodium chloride (NaCl) or potassium chloride (KCl). Although they both appear to effectively stabilize GS, the use of KCl as a stabilizer seems preferable since the average Western diet already provides far too much salt (NaCl) and not enough potassium. However, most of the research has been done with the NaCl-stabilized form.

Concerns have been raised about the quality of GS products on the market. In one study, the amount of glucosamine contained in 14 commercially available glucosamine products varied from 41% to 108% of the amount stated on the label. Even when the weight of the sulfate molecule was included, 11 of the 14 products contained less than the amount of glucosamine stated on the label. Some manufacturers may include the weight of the stabilizing salts (NaCl or KCl) in the total weight of the product, without stating so on the label.

Glucosamine hydrochloride (GH) has been widely available as a dietary supplement for years, but only one trial has evaluated this form of glucosamine as a single remedy for OA. This trial found only minor significant benefits from 1,500 mg per day of GH for eight weeks, in people with osteoarthritis of the knee who were also taking up to 4,000 mg per day of acetaminophen. To more fairly evaluate the effects of GH, future research should involve people not taking pain-relieving medication.

Another form of glucosamine, N-acetyl-glucosamine (NAG), has not been studied in people with osteoarthritis.

How much is usually taken?
Healthy people do not need to routinely supplement with glucosamine. Most research with people who have osteoarthritis, uses 500 mg three times per day of GS. Appropriate amounts for other conditions are not known.

Are there any side effects or interactions?
At the amount most frequently taken by adults-500 mg three times per day of GS-adverse effects have been limited to mild reversible gastrointestinal side effects. In one trial, people with peptic ulcers and those taking diuretic drugs were more likely to experience side effects.

Animal research has raised the possibility that glucosamine could contribute to insulin resistance. This effect might theoretically result from the ability of glucosamine to interfere with an enzyme needed to regulate blood sugar levels. However, available evidence does not suggest that taking glucosamine supplements will trigger or aggravate insulin resistance or high blood sugar. Two large, 3-year controlled trials found that people taking GS had either slightly lower blood glucose levels or no change in blood sugar levels, compared with people taking placebo. Until more is known, people taking glucosamine supplements for long periods may wish to have their blood sugar levels checked; people with diabetes should consult with a doctor before taking glucosamine and should have blood sugar levels monitored if they are taking glucosamine.

In 1999 the first case of an allergic reaction to oral GS was reported. Allergic reactions to this supplement appear to be rare.

Some GS is processed with sodium chloride (table salt), which is restricted in some diets (particularly for people with high blood pressure).

The theory that GS and chondroitin sulfate work synergistically in the treatment of osteoarthritis remains unproven.

Chondroitin Sulfate
Chondroitin sulfate consists of repeating chains of molecules called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Chondroitin sulfate is a major constituent of cartilage, providing structure, holding water and nutrients, and allowing other molecules to move through cartilage-an important property, as there is no blood supply to cartilage.

Where is it found?
The only significant food source of chondroitin sulfate is animal cartilage.

Who is likely to be deficient?
Because the body makes chondroitin, the possibility of a dietary deficiency remains uncertain. Nevertheless, chondroitin sulfate may be reduced in joint cartilage affected by osteoarthritis and possibly other forms of arthritis.

How much is usually taken?
For atherosclerosis, researchers have sometimes started therapy using very high amounts, such as 5 grams twice per day with meals, lowering the amount to 500 mg three times per day after a few months. Before taking such high amounts, people should consult a doctor. For osteoarthritis, a typical level is 400 mg three times per day. Oral chondroitin sulfate is rapidly absorbed in humans when it is dissolved in water prior to ingestion. Approximately 12% of chondroitin sulfate taken by mouth becomes available to the joint tissues from the blood.

Are there any side effects or interactions?
Nausea may occur at intakes greater than 10 grams per day. No other adverse effects have been reported.

One doctor has raised a concern that chondroitin sulfate should not be used by men with prostate cancer. This concern is based upon two studies. In one, the concentration of chondroitin sulfate was found to be higher in cancerous prostate tissue as compared to normal prostate tissue. In the other study, it was shown that higher concentrations of chondroitin sulfate in the tissue surrounding a cancerous prostate tumor predict a higher rate of recurrence of the cancer after surgery. However, no studies to date have addressed the question of whether taking chondroitin sulfate supplements could promote the development of prostate cancer. Simply because a substance is present in or around cancerous tissue does not by itself suggest that that substance is causing the cancer. For example, calcium is a component of atherosclerotic plaques that harden the arteries; however, there is no evidence that taking calcium supplements causes atherosclerosis. To provide meaningful information, further studies would need to track the incidence of prostate cancer in men taking chondroitin supplements. Until then, most nutritionally-oriented doctors remain unconcerned about this issue.

It is not known whether taking glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate in combination is a more effective treatment for osteoarthritis than taking either one by itself.

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring, organic, sulfur-containing compound related to another sulfur-containing substance, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). MSM is found in small amounts throughout nature and has been detected in small amounts in the blood and urine of humans.

Where is it found?
A precursor of MSM is formed initially by ocean plankton and released into the atmosphere, where it interacts with ozone and sunlight and returns to earth as MSM in rainfall. MSM can be taken up by plants and incorporated into their structure, but no measurement of the MSM content of foods has been done. Supplements containing MSM are available.

Who is likely to be deficient?
Although MSM is present in food, it is not an essential nutrient, so deficiency is not likely.

How much is usually taken?
Some authorities report anecdotally that 250-500 mg per day has beneficial effects on a variety of health problems. However, the only controlled trial usi

It is here that Nature’s Plus' dedication to customer satisfaction is brought to life.

The end result: Cutting edge, high energy nutritional supplements that best serve the needs of the consumer.

Tested and Tried:
The Nature’s Plus manufacturing facility is a state-of-the-art showplace for the formulation and manufacture of superior quality, high energy supplements.

All raw materials entering Nature’s Plus' facility are quarantined until specialized Quality Control Technicians confirm that they meet or exceed Nature’s Plus' high standards for quality and purity. It is only then that these new raw materials enter Nature’s Plus' production area.

The highest level of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) is strictly enforced throughout the entire manufacturing process. Quality Assurance Inspectors are stationed at each stage of production to maintain adherence to Nature’s Plus' strict quality control guidelines. Then, at critical checkpoints, each raw material and finished product is subjected to a battery of analytic laboratory tests which guarantee potency, purity, bioavailability and disintegration.

The primary objective of Nature’s Plus is to serve Nature’s Plus' customers and assist in their quest for increased energy and ultimate health. Nowhere is this more apparent than at Nature’s Plus' new East Coast corporate headquarters and distribution center in Melville, New York, Nature’s Plus' state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, also in New York, and at Nature’s Plus' West Coast offices and distribution center in Long Beach, California. It is here that Nature’s Plus dedication to customer satisfaction is brought to life.

These are but a few of the expert quality control procedures used by Nature’s Plus, all of which are essential for the production of the finest high energy supplements available.

Nature’s Plus' expertise in formulation and manufacturing, combined with creativity and dedication, has enabled Nature’s Plus to uphold the highest quality standards possible.

The Nature’s Plus commitment to quality never wavers.

The Art and Science of Quality:
Nature’s Plus' manufacturing division is the perfect union of artistic craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology. Each department was built from the ground up with one mission—To Set The Standard For Quality. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration has used Nature’s Plus' facility to illustrate how a manufacturing operation of this caliber should be run.

The entire building is temperature controlled with elaborate, finely tuned air conditioning and dehumidifying systems. To prevent cross-contamination of ingredients, dust collectors have been installed at strategic points throughout the facility. All personnel wear protective clothing, gloves and hats to prevent any physical contact with raw materials and finished products. Every precaution is taken to ensure the highest level of quality and purity.

Each raw material scheduled for use in production is precisely weighed by Nature’s Plus' pharmacy and released into the "Mixing" area. There, high-speed ribbon blenders uniformly compound the ingredients without altering particle size.

A preliminary batch of 500 tablets or capsules is produced and immediately analyzed for weight variation, disintegration, friability, hardness, thickness and organoleptic characteristics. With the laboratory’s final approval, assuring that every formula exceeds USP (United States Pharmacopoeia) and NF (National Formulary) specifications, the finished product is released to "Bulk Packaging." There, it is sealed in airtight containers and shipped to Nature’s Plus' packaging plants in Melville, New York, and Long Beach, California.

Energy To Go:
After the extensive manufacturing process, Nature’s Plus products are received at Nature’s Plus' distribution and packaging centers where, once again, they are quarantined. A sample is checked against Nature’s Plus' Quality Assurance Inspection Guide by trained personnel and sent to an independent laboratory to confirm the results obtained by Nature’s Plus' in-house laboratory.

Every year, as objective proof of quality and potency, Nature’s Plus publishes the results of this unbiased analysis by an independent testing lab and distributes the Nature’s Plus Independent Laboratory Assay Handbook. This informative book demonstrates that every Nature’s Plus product contains over 100% label claim and offers consumers the best value for their money. No other company offers this guarantee of potency and quality.

As work orders are received, bulk product enters into Nature’s Plus' sterile, temperature- and humidity-controlled packaging facility, where it begins an automated transformation into a finished product. Filled to exact count and weight, each bottle is labeled, sealed and transported to Nature’s Plus' distribution centers. With production complete, Nature’s Plus' computerized inventory control and shipping systems ensure that each bottle shipped contains the freshest product possible.

Nature’s Plus ships every order complete, without back orders or short shipments, within 24 hours—guaranteed. This is made possible by a state-of-the-art computerized order processing system that enhances the speed and efficiency of Nature’s Plus' entire operation.

Automatic Call Distribution (ACD) directs each incoming call to the next available Customer Service Representative. The order is entered, credit is checked, inventory is reduced and a picking slip is generated. Each order is then hand-picked from a sophisticated flow rack system, checked for accuracy with laser scanners, carefully packed and shipped directly to the health food store.

Knowledge Is Power:
Knowledge Is Power. The education of the consumer is essential to the future growth of the health food industry. Nature’s Plus feels it is the consumer’s right to know about nutritional breakthroughs and new trends.

Nature’s Plus, therefore, has equipped their Research department with an extensive in-house library and a complete CD-ROM data bank containing nearly thirty years of published scientific studies. This information is used to develop new formulas as well as the most up-to-date educational literature.

Nature’s Plus modern Graphics Department creates, designs and produces labels, displays, brochures and promotional material. It is here that extensive research is brought to life with a computerized darkroom, a Heidelberg Speedmaster press and automated finishing equipment.

In a continuous effort to educate the health food industry about new market trends and innovations, Nature’s Plus Telemarketing and Marketing Services Departments inform the consumer of the special benefits and knowledge that a health food store can provide. But, most importantly, Nature’s Plus' highly trained sales force, the foundation of Nature’s Plus' success, keeps the health food store in tune with the ever-changing needs of the consumer.

At Nature’s Plus they strongly believe in the power of knowledge.
