GASTRO-CALM
The Process of Digestion
Food travels from your mouth to your stomach through a tube called the esophagus. Once in your stomach, food is
broken down by stomach acid and other stomach secretions. As it passes through the small intestine, the process of
reducing food to small molecules that can be absorbed into the body is complete. The waste from digestion is then
passed through the large intestine before exiting the body.
How Our Digestive System Works
The mouth is the opening through which food passes into the body. The digestion of food begins here with
chewing and the addition of saliva to the food. Food travels down the esophagus, which is a tube that
connects your mouth to your stomach. The lower esophageal sphincter is a muscular valve located at the end of the
esophagus that allows the food to pass from the esophagus into the stomach. The stomach is a pouch-like organ that
receives food from the esophagus. Food is mixed with stomach secretions. The digestion of food continues in the
stomach before entering the small intestine. The duodenum is the first portion of the small intestine. The small
intestine is a small tubular like canal that completes the digestion of food before it enters into the large intestine. The
large intestine is a large tubular-like canal that serves to absorb water for the body and eliminates waste from digestion.
Do you suffer from indigestion, heartburn, GERD or other digestive problems? If so, you’re among the
millions of Americans who suffer the same problems associated with their digestive systems. In fact,
statistics show that gastrointestinal (GI) problems are a significant healthcare concern in the United States.
• One out of every three healthy adults has heartburn at least once a month.
• One out of four adults experiences one or more bouts of indigestion during an average two-week period.
• Over 5 million men and women have peptic ulcers.
• Over 17 million people in the United States suffer symptoms of gastroesophageal reflex disease or
GERD. Heartburn is the most common symptom for this medical condition.
Indigestion is a general term for the uncomfortable and gaseous feelings that occur in the abdomen after eating.
Indigestion can be caused by a number of different reasons including malabsorption problems, decreased stomach acid
and a lack of sufficient digestive enzymes. Gastritis is an inflammation of the lining of the stomach that can lead to
diarrhea, stomach pain and indigestion. Esophageal reflux is a digestive complaint resulting when acid escapes the
stomach into the esophagus. The major complaint of esophageal reflux is heartburn. Heartburn is a burning sensation
in the chest. It has nothing to do with the heart. It refers only to the general area of discomfort.
