Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha lipoic acid helps to neutralize the effects of free radicals on the body by enhancing the antioxidant functions of vitamin C, vitamin E, and glutathione. This nutrient also assures the proper functioning of two key enzymes that convert food into energy.

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a non-prescriptive dietary supplement or nutraceutical. ALA is a powerful antioxidant and can stimulate cellular levels of glutathione. ALA is used to treat individuals with liver disease and Amanita mushroom poisoning.

A study was done on transgenic mouse models of ALS at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA that evaluated the effects of five agents, including ALA, in the transgenic mouse model. The data from the study showed a significant improvement in mouse survival when ALA was administered in their diet. The other four agents showed no effect. The concern of translating this data to human effectiveness is that ALA has a very short half-life, only 30 minutes. It is not known if the drug levels are maintained in humans to produce the same effect.

At this time there are no known side effects and ALA is well tolerated. However, it has been noted that some patients do experience gastric symptoms.

There have been no significant studies that have suggested a recommended dose of ALA for ALS patients. Data gathered from patients with whom we have contact, shows the dosage of Alpha lipoic acid being from 200-300mg twice per day while under the care of their physician.
