It all began when Burt caught a swarm and started keeping bees. Then the company cooked up some polish recipes they found in old magazines. Their first factory was an abandoned one room schoolhouse in rural Maine. They bottled honey and sold beeswax stove furniture and shoe polish at craft fairs around Maine. Their first expansion… downtown to the old bowling alley on Water Street in Guilford, Maine, they started their lip balm department. By 1992 they were making half a million beeswax candles a year. They outgrew Guilford and moved to North Carolina in 1994. Finally they are at 8221-A Brownleigh drive Raleigh, North Carolina.

Burt's Bees Today and Looking to the Future

Today, we are the leading manufacturer of Earth-friendly natural personal care products, with sales topping $250 million in 2006. We manufacture over 150 products in categories including face care, body care, hair care, lip care, men's grooming, baby care and outdoor remedies. Our products are carried in nearly 30,000 retail outlets, including major grocery and drug store chains in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Canada, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

We remain committed to the environment with recycled and recyclable packaging and nature-safe manufacturing processes, and we're continuing the land preservation efforts we started in Maine. We're also helping out our fellow humans, too, with initiatives to provide sustainable housing for the less fortunate. It's all part of our dedication to The Greater Good, a set of standards for the products we make and the way we live.
