What is Glucosamine & Chondroitin?

Glucosamine: is an amino sugar produced from the shells of chitin (shellfish) and is a key component of the extracellular matrix of cartilage. Glucosamine works to stimulate joint function and repair.

Glucosamine is a very effective treatment for osteoarthritis in humans and arthritis and hip dysplasia in pets. It has been proven effective in treating osteoarthritis pain, rehabilitating cartilage, renewing synovial fluid, and repairing joints that have been damaged from osteoarthritis.

Our bodies produce Glucosamine naturally. However, as we grow older we lose the ability to produce sufficient quantities. Having enough Glucosamine is essential to producing the nutrients we need to produce Synovial fluid. It is this fluid which lubricates our cartilage and maintains healthy joints.

Chondroitin:
helps bond connective tissue to prevent tearing, and inhibits enzymes that can deplete cartilage nutrition. (Cartilage functions to protect bones from moving against each other and to reduce friction).

Chondroitin helps retain moisture in the joints, allowing for flexibility and resiliency, and cushioning against activities like jumping and lifting. In addition, chondroitin works with other nutrients like glucosamine to stimulate the rebuilding and maintenance of cartilage.

The body produces chondroitin, but that production decreases as we grow older. Chondroitin is found in foods, but usually only in small amounts. Fortunately, the body absorbs chondroitin well, making supplementation a viable alternative.

The Combination Of Glucosamine & Chondroitin:
The taking of the combination of these two products as supplements is widely practiced by patients suffering from osteoarthritis. Many believe that the combination of these two will have a stronger effect than taking them individually.

However, there have been no clinical trials supporting the theory that taking these two supplements together is more effective than taking them alone. It is only based on assumptions; hypotheses remain unproven.

The primary use of glucosamine and chondroitin supplements is to slow the progression of osteoarthritis, and to reduce the pain associated to this disorder. The repair and formation of new cartilage is what glucosamine has been known to achieve for osteoarthritis patients.

Chondroitin is also known to reduce pain. It has also been associated with inhibiting the enzymes that cause the deterioration of cartilage. Other effects of chondroitin in the body include the promotion of elasticity in the cartilage, which allows the joints to move more freely.

Summary:
These two supplements are the primary ways of effectively treating osteoarthritis. Taking either of these two supplements has been proven to slow the effects, as well as easing the pains associated with this degenerative disorder.
