What is L-Glutamine?
L-Glutamine is the most abundant naturally occurring, non-essential amino acid in the human body and one of the only amino acids which directly crosses the blood-brain barrier. In the body it is found circulating in the blood as well as stored in the skeletal muscles. It becomes conditionally essential (requiring intake from food or supplements) in states of illness or injury.
There are actually multiple benefits of l-glutamine for bodybuilders, although due to the numerous benefits associated with this amino acid, everyone can actually benefit. For bodybuilders, however, the importance of l-glutamine is muscle function and metabolism. Next to protein, l-glutamine powder is becoming a hot topic in gyms around the world.
L-glutamine helps to build strong, healthy muscle, in that it plays a vital role in muscle synthesis. When there isn't enough of this amino acid, the muscle will start to break down, despite other important nutrients that it has, such as protein or creatine.
L-glutamine has also been proven to increase the body's natural growth hormones. Again, this is something that is important to bodybuilders. On top of this, it increases the healing time for wounds, and this would include the repair time for damaged muscle tissue.
Of course, aside from the muscle building benefit of l-glutamine, bodybuilders get the other wonderful benefits that everyone else gets as well. This includes an enhanced immune system, mental alertness, memory improvement, a healthy intestinal tract, stabilized blood sugar, a decrease in alcohol cravings, a maintained acid and alkaline balance, and so much more.
Again, this amino acid is produced naturally by the body. In fact, there is more of this in your body than any of the others. However, when you workout, your supply of l-glutamine is depleted, because its busy working for you, and naturally, it takes time for your body to build up its supply again...unless you use l-glutamine supplements.
L-glutamine, of course, has many other benefits and functions as well. For example, it is important for a clean intestinal tract. It boosts the immune system. It improves brain function, including alertness and memory. The list of benefits goes on and on.
As a nutrient that occurs naturally in the body glutamine is safe to take although ingesting excessive amounts could cause an upset stomach.
You can purchase l-glutamine powder in your local health food store, or through online sources. Experts recommend usage between 500mg and 4000mg per day, but bodybuilders should take about 10 to 15 grams per day. This dosage should be spread out through the day. Even just two grams per day will increase your body's output of growth hormones by about 400%.
If you are a bodybuilder, you will want to take this powder once in the morning, after your workout, and again right before going to bed at night. If you find that you have trouble sleeping after taking l-glutamine - and some people do, because of the enhanced mental alertness - you should split the amount that you are taking, per day, into two dosages, taken in the morning, and after your workout, skipping the bedtime dosage.
Before you buy this amino acid powder, make sure that you are not already getting the additional l-glutamine in other supplements that you currently take. Read the labels! Today, many protein supplements contain it, and you need to find out how much of it is in your protein supplement, before you start taking additional l-glutamine! With that said, you are going to be amazed at the difference that this amino acid makes in your life - and in your bodybuilding efforts.
