Folic Acid is a B-vitamin that is essential for the synthesis of DNA. Folic acid therefore plays a major role in the body, and its deficiency has been implicated in a wide variety of disorders. For example, Alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis, heart attack and stroke are correlated with low folate levels, as are osteoporosis, cervical and colon cancer, depression, dementia, hearing loss, and various birth defects. It is said that the folate intake of most North Americans is less than optimal. Furthermore, many drugs such as methotrexate, levopoda, niacin, phenytoin (Dilantin), carbamazepine, and theophylline can markedly reduce folate levels.
This vitamin can decrease the risk for cleft palate and birth defects of the brain (anencephaly) or spine (spina bifida). If you have any chance of getting pregnant you should be using folate supplementation because by the time you know you’re pregnant, your future baby’s brain and spine are already formed. Prenatal use of folic acid also appears to reduce the risk of childhood leukemia.
Folic acid and other B vitamins help break down the body’s homocysteine which, if it accumulates, can lead to fatal coronary heart disease and stroke. Low folate levels (high homocysteine levels) are also implicated in psoriasis and restless leg syndrome.
Folate supplementation can prevent or reverse cervical dysplasia, and can significantly improve the condition of depressed patients.
Caution: Extra folic acid can mask the symptoms of vitamin B-12 deficiency, a problem of the elderly that can lead to permanent nerve damage if left untreated.
